DANISH. Circa 1885. Solid gold full hunter cased keyless lever pocket watch numbered 12229 with Jules Jurgensen's unique patented hand-setting mechanism in the suspension bow.

The dial, inner dust cover and mechanism signed Jules Jurgensen, Copenhagen. The dust cover further inscribed Patent 1867 January 15. This referring to the special system on the pendant for time setting and winding the movement via the crown, this accomplished by tilting the pendant towards the dial which disengages the crown from the winding mechanism while engaging it with the time setting system. The unusual oblique degree engravings on the regulator bridge were also patented on January 15th 1867.

Hand-wound Watch Movement: Signed, Jurgensen, Copenhagen. No 12229. The high quality jewelled bridge movement has a lever escapement with long index regulator to the scale on the centre bridge, gold weights on the balance and gold capped escape wheel and lever.

18 Carat yellow gold case 5.4cm diameter, excluding the crown with all over engine turned engraving and with no personal monograms. The case in nice condition, the front cover flips open as it should and the cases three closures are secure.

White enamel dial with black Roman numerals, fine steel moon hands and a subsidiary seconds dial. Diameter of the case 5.4cm. Weight including mechanism 159.3gms.

The watch is in what may be its original travelling case. It is marked for the Scottish goldsmith of James Ritchie & Son. The case opens to display the watch as a watch stand.

The watch is in good working order, in testing it ran 1 minute fast over 24 hours, it then ran on till stopping after 32 hours. We have not adjusted the timekeeping but there is ample room to improve it.
