Antique Gothic Revival Gilt Brass Scottish Mantel Clock Circa 1870 By Peard & Co
Attributed to Bruce J. Talbert, by "Hart, Son, Peard & Co." (the attributed makers).
Bruce James Talbert (1838-1881) was a Scottish architect, interior designer and author, best known for his work in the Gothic Revival style. Talbert supplied his work to many manufacturers including Hart, Son, Peard & Co. who were artistic metalworkers.
This imposing gilt brass clock stands 25.5 inches high. The brass case has engraved decoration and is mounted with 8 red ruby glass cabochon finials and is surmounted with a further red glass mounted spiked finial. It is engraved above dial with an armorial crest. Inscribed, "Perseverantia Victor" (Victor through perseverance), a family crest.
The 6 inch dial is enamelled with patterns inspired by Celtic designs, Roman numerals and pierced and engraved brass hands. The two train clock movement strikes the hours and halves on a gong and is numbered 6261 (64).
